Most Brits support sending troops to Ukraine with peace plan ‘95% done | World | News

Most Britons (56%) would support UK peacekeeping troops being sent to Ukraine in the event a peace deal is agreed, according to a new poll. The UK has said it is ready to send troops, alongside European allies, to the war-torn country to help secure peace as talks on ending the conflict appear to be making progress.

The YouGov poll found 23% of Britons surveyed opposed stationing UK peacekeepers to Ukraine. The question, asked as part of a monthly survey of people in major European nations, found the other countries to be largely divided on the issue, except for Spain where the proposal has majority support with 62% in favour, compared to 22% against. In France, 40% back the plan, while 36% oppose it.

The rest were as follows:

  • Poland – 36% support, 43% oppose

  • Germany – 42% support, 44% oppose

  • Italy – 40% support, 44% oppose

Brits stand alone in being particularly more likely to want to support Ukraine until it prevails against Russia, according to the YouGov poll between December 8-17.

Forty-eight percent backed Ukraine until victory, compared to 24% in favour of a negotiated end to the conflict, even if it left Moscow in control of conquered land.

Poles are slightly more likely to favour continuing the war (38%), with 32% preferring a peace deal.

On the other hand, 53% of Italians are in favour of a diplomatic end to the bloody war, with only 20% willing to continue backing Ukraine indefinitely.

A negotiated peace is also preferred in Germany (45%), Spain (39%) and France (38%).

All six of the nations have been supporting Ukraine with military equipment and aid following Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The release of the poll came after Donald Trump on Sunday said an agreement on ending the war was “close to 95%” done following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida on Sunday.

The US President said “one or two very thorny issues” still needed to be addressed, including the future of the Donbas where Russia has seized most of the land.

The YouGov poll found Europeans tend to think Mr Trump wants Russia to win the war.

Fifty-percent of Brits said he was in favour of Russia, with 7% saying Ukraine. Twenty-one answered ‘has no preference’, while 22% selected ‘don’t know’.

Mr Trump has continued to push for the war to end since returning to the White House in January, insisting it never would have started if he had been president.

The YouGov poll also found Europeans are strongly in favour of Russia paying for the reconstruction of Ukraine as detailed in European peace proposals — however, this is considered extremely likely.
