Man Utd set for swift Joao Gomes meeting after ‘gentleman’s agreement’ | Football | Sport
Manchester United will come face-to-face with Joao Gomes when they welcome Wolves to Old Trafford for a huge Premier League showdown on Tuesday evening. United have been keeping tabs on Gomes as they look to bolster their options in midfield.
Gomes has impressed in England since joining Wolves from Flamengo at the start of 2023. The 24-year-old has featured 108 times for the Black Country side and has also won 10 caps for Brazil over the last couple of years. And he could be the man to solve Ruben Amorim’s midfield woes, with Bruno Fernandes currently injured and Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte facing uncertain futures.
United will meet Gomes on the pitch as the Red Devils go in search of their ninth Premier League victory of the campaign.
Amorim’s side have lost just two of their previous 12 league matches, with United overcoming Newcastle 1-0 on Boxing Day.
But Gomes will be hoping to help Wolves claim a first Premier League victory of the season, with the Molineux side currently 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
United could turn to Gomes if they feel he can make a positive impact in the north west. The 13-time Premier League champions have also been linked with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton and Athletic Madrid ace Conor Gallagher are also said to be on the Red Devils’ radar, with Amorim likely to receive plenty of financial backing in January and in the summer.
However, United could be dealt a blow if they are unwilling to wait until the summer to land Gomes as Wolves are said to have a gentleman’s agreement with new boss Rob Edwards not to offload their best players in January. And unless that agreement is broken, Wolves will look to hold onto Gomes.
United could attempt to get a deal over the line next month by tabling a bid that can’t be turned down, with the player mooted to have a price tag of £44million.
But if Red Devils transfer chiefs don’t stump up enough cash, United may have to wait until the end of the campaign to thrash out a deal. And by that time, they could move on to other targets instead.
United are the overwhelming favourites to beat Wolves, with Edwards’ side finding the back of the net just three times away from home all season.
But in the same fixture last season, United suffered a 1-0 defeat, with Pablo Sarabia popping up with the only goal of the game.
