‘I’m a fashion expert – 5 trends set to dominate in 2026’

Fashion experts are predicting that the polished “clean girl” aesthetic will fall away in 2026, with relaxed and boho looks set to replace this once-popular style. Second-hand and vintage pieces are predicted to take centre stage in the new year, with 90s grunge, indie sleaze, and the boho chic aesthetic making a comeback.

Trend expert, Hannah Miller, from the online vintage retailer Messina Hembry, says: “From what we’ve seen in 2025, it seems as though the clean aesthetic which has dominated the past few years is coming to an end. In its place, there’s a clear shift towards baggier, more relaxed fits – whether in a softer boho style or the grungy ’90s revival. People are definitely moving away from a polished, put-together look.”

Hannah notes: “Staple brands that always sell well are Carhartt, Levi’s, Ralph Lauren and, of course, sportswear brands like Nike, adidas, ASICS. These are staple items bought for both comfort and capsule wardrobes for those with established personal styles.

“They are also a go-to for people who are only just beginning to explore vintage, as these brands are classic, reliable, and known for producing well-established, good-quality pieces.”

Burberry print

Burberry made a big comeback in 2025, particularly with their iconic Nova print, and this is set to continue into 2026. Hannah says: “There are so many ways to wear print, from small accessories like scarves and bags to staple items like jeans, tops, and the iconic Burberry trench coat – whether featuring the all-over print or just with the trims on show.”

Indie sleaze

The indie sleaze style popular in the 2000s and characterised by a low-maintenance, vintage-inspired look rooted in indie rock and electronic music is set to make a return in 2026. Leather boots and jackets, and studded accessories are likely to be seen, as this dramatic look replaces the currently popular clean-girl style.

Oversized and baggy clothes

“Oversized and baggy clothing marks another move away from the polished, old-money look that has dominated the past few years,” says Hannah. “Baggier jeans are here to stay, and there’s no sign of skinny jeans making a comeback in 2026.”

Hannah adds: “If anything, the trend will shift towards low-rise bootcut styles. There was also an increase in oversized polo shirts this year, a style set to grow in popularity in 2026. Brands such as Ralph Lauren, Hollister, and Fred Perry are expected to dominate this trend, especially in the second-hand market.”

Boho

Boho is another style that’s expected to make a comeback in 2026, with Hannah identifying the brand Chloé, known for their balloon-sleeve, delicate, semi-sheer boho blouses and tops, as one that has been gaining popularity in recent months. Flowy skirts also made a comeback in the summer of 2025, with this set to repeat come the hot summer months.

Hannah added: “This trend ties in well with the baggy, carefree style that’s becoming increasingly popular with styles like layering of skirts and dresses over trousers, which could definitely make a strong return next summer. Pantone’s colour of the year is ‘Cloud Dancer’, and the soft, airy feel aligns perfectly with the revival of boho chic.”

Pirate core

Emerging from a blend of boho and indie sleaze, “pirate core” is set to take 2026 by storm. Think balloon trousers, lace bell sleeves, pirate-style boots, studded statement belts, and other nautical-inspired elements.
