UK holidaymakers struggling to find the ideal January escape may need to look no further, with a Mediterranean island just hours away proving a perfect candidate. The gorgeous island of Cyprus, nestled in the Mediterranean, is a mere four-and-a-half-hour journey from London and could offer the perfect winter escape. 

Cyprus is a popular tourist destination, boasting year-round sunshine and a warm climate, which are among the island’s biggest draws. As much as 90% of the country speaks English, meaning tourists can leave the phrase book at home and spend more time taking in the beautiful landscape and stunning historical sites. 

According to Tui, January is still the coldest month of the year in Cyprus, but temperatures typically range from 10 to 16 degrees Celsius. They explained that the weather is still typically mild, with coastal regions often being slightly warmer than inland areas.

No trip to Cyprus would be complete without a trip to the beach, with Nissi and Fig Tree Bay among the very best. History lovers will find the Greek and Roman ruins at the UNESCO World Heritage Paphos Archaeological Park truly fascinating. 

The site features almost perfectly preserved Roman mosaics, remains of an old theatre and even the medieval Saranta Kolones Castle. The Tombs of the Kings, a large underground burial ground carved out of solid rock, is another must on any trip to the island. 

The stunning 2,400-year-old necropolis is home to underground tombs dating back to the 4th Century and is an ideal day trip for the little €2.50 entrance fee. Meanwhile, those looking for something a bit different may want to climb the famous Troodos Mountains or explore the beautiful sea caves at Cape Greco. 

The Troodos Mountains even boasts an impressive ski resort open from January until March, making the new year the perfect time to visit for many. Tourists intrigued by Greek mythology, Cyprus is honoured as the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite.

Aphrodite’s Rock, marking this important mythological figure, is located on the southwest coast of Cyprus between the cities of Paphos and Limassol.

Those after a more relaxing trip may wish to indulge in some of Cyprus’ famous cuisine with Halloumi cheese, olive oil and fresh fruits packing out the markets and high streets.

January is often one of the cheapest times to visit, with tourists able to secure one-way flights from as little as £30 during off-peak times.
