A pretty city has been dubbed the “prettiest town in Europe” and perfect for a quick getaway. The city is just a short flight away from the UK and it has captured the hearts of its visitors.
The city in Belgium has gained a huge reputation for those looking to visit somewhere that looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale.
Posting to a TikTok account under the name of @alexzouaghi, one impressed visitor said: “This is probably the prettiest town in Europe and you’re going to want to visit it asap!
“Canals, little bridges, cobblestones and the cutest houses you’ll ever see, this little town located in Belgium is less than an hour away from the capital city, Brussels.”
Bruges in Belgium is known for its quaint style, picturesque cobblestone streets and old-fashioned buildings. You can reach Bruges easily for a weekend away by flying to Brussels and then taking a train journey to the iconic city. From London, it takes just over an hour to fly to Brussels, followed by a train journey of just under an hour to Bruges.
One person who visited the city on Tripadvisor said: “Amazing! One of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited.
“So much history and amazing architecture. I highly recommend visiting.”
Another penned: “Oh wow!!! Love it here – gorgeous cobbled streets and just historic buildings everywhere.
“We walked through the streets stopping for a coffee here and there. I’ve loved the atmosphere here, streets are not too crowded due to the time of year. So much more to see.”
One must-visit while you’re in the city is the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The chapel contains a phial that reputedly contains Christ’s blood brought back from the Crusades. The building itself is a work of art and a standout spot in the city, known for its incredible architecture and stunning interior design.
While you’re in the city, you should also get a Belgian waffle which you can have topped with a choice of chocolate, whipped cream, strawberries or many other delicious sweet options.
Bruges is a very walkable city – the best way to explore is by foot and it won’t take you long to tour its scenic streets without taking any public transportation. As you’re walking, you will likely pass by Minnewater Lake which is a great place to explore if you love seeing open water. The lake has a path around it which means there’s an easy walking route set out for you to follow.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “Beautiful Lake at Bruges, you must go if you go to Bruges. Very beautiful scenery, you can walk along the lake, the path around the lake is very shady with shady trees.”
