Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to send a warning to Donald Trump regarding Ukrainian territory during a tense meeting at the US President’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

When asked about the much-contested Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian President told press “we have to respect our law and our people” and the “territory which we control” following the private meeting with Donald Trump in Florida. He continued: “It’s the land of our nation, the land for a lot of generations.”

The US President acknowledged there were one or two “thorny issues” still up for discussion, but that they had made “great progress” today and over the last month.

When asked specifics of the “thorny issues”, Donald Trump referred to some land being “up for grabs”. He continued: “I think the land you’re talking about, some of that land has been taken.

“Some of that land is maybe up for grabs, but it may be taken over the next period of a number of months, and you’re better off making a deal.”

When asked whether they had made an agreement on zones in Donbas, President Trump said: “The word agree is too strong, but we’re getting closer. That’s one of the big issues. It’s unresolved, but we’re getting closer.”

The pair met at Trump’s residence today to discuss a 20-point peace proposal, aimed at ending Russia‘s war on Ukraine.

Russia wants to take control of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region as a condition for ending the war, despite not controlling the entire area. Ukraine has ruled out accepting this.

Talking to reporters before the pair went inside, Donald Trump said it was going to be a “good meeting” that would be “good for Ukraine”.
