‘Amazing’ Western ‘even better than Westworld’ on Film 4 tonight | Films | Entertainment
Merging a Western with an extraterrestrial thriller might sound like an outlandish proposition.
Yet it’s precisely this audacious combination that has endeared Cowboys and Aliens to audiences who relish its unapologetic entertainment value. Boasting A-list stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, the protagonists must battle otherworldly invaders who have kidnapped local residents.
Whilst the film sparked debate amongst critics upon release, the performances and visual effects earned widespread acclaim, leaving supporters baffled by detractors, with one fan questioning: “I mean, c’mon, Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford fighting aliens on horseback? What’s not to love?”.
The story unfolds in 1873’s American Southwest, where outlaw Jake Lonergan (Craig) regains consciousness in the wilderness with amnesia and a peculiar metallic device strapped to his arm. He stumbles into the settlement of Absolution, where the Sheriff immediately recognises him and orders his detention.
An enigmatic woman called Ella, portrayed by Olivia Wilde, supports Jake, though he faces transport to Santa Fe for trial alongside an intoxicated youth named Percy. Percy’s influential rancher father, Woodrow Dolarhyde (Ford), demands custody of both his offspring and Jake, who is indebted to him, reports the Mirror.
Whilst tensions escalate between the sheriff and Woodrow, extraterrestrial forces launch an assault, capturing several townsfolk including Percy. Jake’s mysterious wristband springs into action, bringing down one of the alien vessels.
The fight begins to liberate the captives and uncover the aliens’ earthly mission. Adapted from Scott Mitchell Rosenberg’s 2006 graphic novel, the film was helmed by Jon Favreau and hit cinemas in 2011.
It received a lukewarm reception from critics, although the performances of the lead actors and the special effects were widely praised.
The film has garnered a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans sharing their thoughts. One viewer couldn’t fathom the negative reviews, saying: “Unique storyline, excellent acting, good special effects,” they enthused.
“I don’t understand the poor reviews but this movie is always moving and never boring. I mean, c’mon, Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford fighting aliens on horseback? What’s not to love? It’s just so good!”.
Another fan appreciated the genre-blending: “It’s Indiana Jones, Star Wars, James Bond, Alien, Predator, The Frisco Kid, and District 9 wrapped up into a single film and amazingly, it works!” they wrote. A third added: “This is one of my old go-to favourites! ! I’m not really into westerns generally. This however is funny, dramatic, action-packed and the alien aspect is awesome! The actor line-up seems to be perfect and really makes the movie great.”
A fourth addesaid: “Awesome movie. Gave me brief vibes of the Knights of Cedonia music video by Muse as well as the classic movie with Yul Brenner, Westworld. Cowboys, aliens, laser guns, the only things missing are ninjas and dinosaurs.”
Cowboys and Aliens is on Film 4 at 6.45pm on December 6.
