Simon Calder shares affordable destination for winter 2025 that’s perfect for pensioners | Europe | Travel

Travel expert Simon Calder recommended the Algarve, in Portugal, as a perfect winter sun getaway. The Algarve is an affordable destination with an average daily maximum of 18C in December, although “during the day temperatures can reach up to 20C in some areas,” according to TUI

The coastal area is filled with picturesque and walkable towns, making it an ideal destination for pensioners seeking a relaxing winter escape. Travellers who wish to explore the stunning Algarve without the masses should head there in December, when the most popular towns remain tranquil compared to the summer season. Speaking previously on BBC Breakfast, Simon noted that Portugal ranks among the finest choices for those seeking a winter getaway: “In Western Europe, it has to be Portugal – obviously a very popular package holiday destination.”

One of the most beautiful and walkable towns in the Algarve is Portimao. A holidaymaker said on Reddit: “Highly recommend Portimao, somewhere between the central city and Praia da Rocha area. The city of Portimao itself has tons of restaurants, cafes and a walkable riverside area. Then the Praia da Rocha area has the beautiful beaches and more touristy areas.”

Travel expert Alice Smith explained on her travel blog Adventuresofalice that Portimao is a “wonderful” and very “authentic” Portuguese town. She said: “I loved how authentic it was. It’s simply a typical Portuguese working town.

“While I was there, I didn’t feel too overcrowded by tourists like you often do in other parts of the Algarve. The Algarve as a whole, is much busier, of course. One of the best places to visit in Portugal, it’s incredibly popular with travellers around the globe.”

The closest airport to Portimao is Faro Airport, located 30 miles away. There are direct flights to Faro from most UK airports, including London Gatwick and Manchester Airport.

Simon Calder also recommended the town of Cassis, in the south of France, an “absolutely magical” place that’s easy to visit in winter.
