With Christmas just around the corner, many people will be looking for their next festive watch for movie night. Luckily, review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes has recently published its list of the top 100 Christmas films of all time, and many of the famous favourites don’t even make the top 10.

Coming in at number 10 is Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life, rated 94%. An uplifting treat, Rotten Tomatoes calls the film “the holiday classic to define all holiday classics”.

At number nine is Carol, a film adapted from the novel The Price of Salt. It follows aspiring photographer Therese and her forbidden romance with an older, sophisticated woman named Carol in 1950s New York. It achieved a rating of 94%.

The recent heartwarming animated film Klaus achieved a spot on the list at number eight, with a score of 95%. It became an instant classic due to its spin on the traditional Santa Claus narrative.

Another animated film is at number seven, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Critics say it’s a “stunningly original and visually delightful work of stop-motion animation”. It scored 95%.

Another film that scored 95% is Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig in 2019. Critics say it is a “smart, sensitive retelling of its classic source material”, proving that “some stories truly are timeless”.

In at number five is Miracle on 34th Street, which follows a mall Santa claiming to be Father Christmas. It scored an impressive 96%.

Taking fourth place is Tangerine, directed by Sean Baker. It follows a transgender sex worker who enacts revenge upon her boyfriend for cheating on her.

It’s been hailed by critics as “an old-fashioned comedy at heart – and a pretty wonderful one at that”.

In third place is 2023’s The Holdovers, a film that will be watched for generations to come. Critics say it’s “beautifully bittersweet” and “marks a satisfying return to form for director Alex Payne”.

Just missing out on number one is Meet Me in St. Louis, which scored 99%. It is a musical which has “outstanding performances” from Judy Garland and Margaret O’Brien.

At number one is one you may not expect: The Shop Around The Corner. Scoring an impressive 99%, the film follows two coworkers who are unaware that they are each other’s pen pals.

Critics say it is a “romantic comedy in the finest sense of the term”.

Despite containing many great films, the top 10 doesn’t include some of the films you might’ve expected.

Die Hard just missed out at number 11, whilst Elf was at number 27, scoring 86%. Home Alone didn’t even make the list, with a score of 66%.
