‘Guilty pleasure’ horror film with British acting royalty on ITV tonight | Films | Entertainment

Horror enthusiasts can indulge in a ‘guilty pleasure’ flick from a legendary franchise, as it graces ITV’s screen.

ITV4 is set to air Jaws the Revenge tonight, a part of the cult classic Jaws series. The original film made waves in 1975, followed by Jaws 2 in 1978 and Jaws 3 in 1983.

This fourth instalment, released in 1987, centres on Ellen Brody (Lorraine Gary), a widow whose family has been haunted by shark attacks, including her son who falls prey to a colossal great white. Grieving, Ellen visits her other son Michael (Lance Guest) in the Bahamas, where she encounters the charismatic Hoagie Newcombe (Michael Caine) and romance blossoms.

However, as Ellen and Hoagie’s relationship unfolds, a gigantic shark emerges off the island’s coast, reigniting Ellen’s battle with the great whites.

The film isn’t exactly renowned for its cinematic excellence, with many movie buffs dubbing it a ‘guilty pleasure’. Hastily produced in under nine months, critics pointed out an apparent lack of script in its early stages and felt it fell short of its predecessors’ success and acclaim, reports the Mirror.

Despite its lukewarm reception, Michael Caine reportedly pocketed a cool $1.5 million for his role.

Despite this, some cinema enthusiasts still believe it merits viewing.

One viewer awarded it three stars on Rotten Tomatoes, writing: “One of my biggest guilty pleasures. Its a film that is soo fascinatingly bad that it needs to be studied, and at the same time its concept is so batshit insane that I can’t look away. And it’s moments of insanity just add to its “so bad, its good” entertainment value.”

Another said: “While it has Flaws, Jaws the Revenge has emotional and fun moments for everybody in the family.

“This film is not that bad. I liked it,” added a third viewer.

Another said: “Always felt this was treated on unfairly… it better then Jaws 3.”

Nevertheless, some movie buffs caution that it fails to measure up to the other entries in the legendary franchise.

One reviewer wrote: “If there is any movie out there that proves what will happen if we continue franchises past their prime, it’s this movie.”

Another said: “Horrible film. This sorry chapter in the franchise is easily the worst. The plots dumb, the actors or bad, and the shark just follows everyone around. How was this even made?”.

“Why does this movie even exist. Why a shark would seek revenge,it’s trash. It’s not even so bad it’s good,” remarked another critic.

Jaws The revenge airs on ITV 4 at 9pm on Thursday 4 November.
