‘Few will be fooled by Starmer’s attempt to shift the spotlight away f | Politics | News

Who is to blame for the terrible state of the British economy? Most reasonable people might point the finger at Labour chancellor Rachel Reeves and her car crash Budget, or to previous Tory governments who did so much harm over 14 years.

But no. According to Labour prime minister Sir Keir Starmer, speaking on Monday, the real blame for our economic disaster lies with the 17.4m British people who dared to vote for Brexit in the 2016 EU referendum. Few will be fooled by Starmer’s transparent attempt to shift the spotlight away from his chancellor and her disastrous Budget.

We can all see that Reeves imposing another £26bn in taxes, while spending another £9bn on welfare, is yet another attack on alarm clock Britain that keeps this country running.

Worse, we now know that her Budget was based on fixed figures. As leader of Reform UK, I have written to ask the parliamentary ethics watchdog to investigate how Reeves misled the British public.

My deputy Richard Tice MP has written to the prime minister to ask if she broke the ministerial code.

Yet in the delusional world of Labour, none of this matters. Instead at his Monday press conference, Starmer demanded that we “all now confront the reality”.

Not the reality of the UK’s self-inflicted economic mess, but his fantasy version that says Brexit “significantly hurt our economy,” so that the UK now needs to “keep moving towards a closer relationship with the EU” under Labour.

The PM and his friends in big business always despised Brexit and the millions who voted for it. They now want to take us back as close to single market membership as they can.

They are not economically literate enough to see the advantages of a properly-implemented Brexit.

Most small businesses voted Brexit because they wanted to cut red tape. Instead, with EU rules still in place, the situation has got worse.

Much of the blame for this comes down to the Tories. From Boris so-called “oven ready” deal with the EU onwards, Conservative governments betrayed the true potential of Brexit.

Through 14 years of Tory rule, they put up your taxes, increased energy bills and tripled the national debt, while doing nothing to assert our independence. They never deserve to be forgiven.

Only Reform UK can be trusted to fix broken Britain. We will cut public spending, slash red tape, remove EU rules and be on the side of the small businesses and working people who make up alarm clock Britain.

We will also finally make good on the promise on Brexit, by taking back control of Britain’s borders, laws and money. And we will never try to blame British voters for the problems created by the establishment’s own failures.
