Russia attacks Kyiv as Ukraine team in US for Trump peace plan talks | World | News

Russian drone and missile attacks on Kyiv have killed at least three people this weekend amid continued efforts from the US and Donald Trump to bring peace. Two people were killed in Ukraine’s capital city, and another in the broader Kyiv region, the regional police said. A further 29 people were wounded in the city, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Debris from intercepted drones also struck residential buildings, and western Kyiv lost power. This comes as a Ukrainian delegation travelled to the US, headed by national security chief Rustem Umerov, for peace discussions. Volodymyr Zelensky said the latest round of talks would help to “swiftly and substantively work out the steps needed to end the war”.

First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya, who is part of the delegation, said “small changes can lead to large outcomes” during peace discussions.

He wrote on X: “As a weatherman would say, there’s the inherent difficulty in forecasting because the atmosphere is a chaotic system where small changes can lead to large outcomes.”

A US delegation is also due to travel to Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin next week.

Donald Trump recently presented a plan for ending the war, but it heavily favoured Russia and prompted Mr Zelensky to engage with US negotiators again.

European leaders also got involved in the negotiations to be more accommodating to Ukraine.

The US President maintained his plan was “fine-tuned” and confirmed that envoy Steve Witkoff would be meeting with Putin in the days to come.

He suggested a potential meeting with Putin and Mr Zelensky, but only once further progress has been made in negotiations.
