Heavy rain across the country could be followed by outbreaks of snow, according to new weather data. Weather forecasts by WXCharts.com show snow could fall across northern Scotland and northern England throughout Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning.

It comes after the Met Office issued an amber warning for rain for much of south Wales on Monday. A Met Office spokesperson said: “Saturday will see rain accumulate in eastern parts of England, with a yellow warning in force through the day. Wet surfaces overnight in northern parts of England introduce the chance of ice forming, with a yellow warning issued for this overnight into Sunday morning.”

They added: “The transition back to wet weather will start overnight Sunday and into Monday, with rain the most significant hazard of the weather forecast.”

A Met Office forecast for Saturday evening said: “Rain clearing into the North Sea with strong winds in the east, especially along the coast.

“Elsewhere, drier with clear spells leading to a widespread frost and some icy stretches.”

The WXCharts.com weather data shows a significant buildup of snow across Scotland.

In the north-west of the country, snow could be as deep as 4cm, with Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow all likely to be affected.

Meanwhile in England, as much as 1cm per hour could fall across parts of Northumberland, Yorkshire and Lancashire, bringing with it the threat of travel disruption.

Snow is likely to ease throughout Sunday, giving way for an increase in rainfall ahead of Monday’s Amber warning.

A Met Office forecast for Sunday said: “Drier, brighter and chillier on Sunday. Winds easing in the east with showers mainly in the north and west.

“Turning cloudier across Northern Ireland with rain arriving by the evening.”

Met Office deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “Heavy rain will move over south Wales from late Sunday and through Monday. Whilst rainfall amounts will vary, the largest accumulations are expected over the highest ground in south Wales and could reach 100-120mm through the day.

“60-80mm is most likely for many hills within the Amber warning area, while those to lower levels should see around 20-40mm through the day.

“Wider yellow warnings for rain have also been issued for the southwest and northwest of England, as well as central and northern parts of Wales with disruption also possible in these areas through the day.

“This is a developing forecast, so it’s important to stay up to date with Met Office warnings in the coming days.”
