The UK Championship, the first Triple Crown event of the season, starts today at the Barbican in York, with a top prize of £250,000. Judd Trump headlines the opening day by beginning his title defence against Stephen Maguire.

His opponent is a former champion himself and has reached the final two more times – 2007 and 2019 – since that success in 2004. World No.1 Trump has yet to win an event this year after losing in the finals of the Champion of Champions and Northern Ireland Open.

Their match opens the tournament at 1pm. Ryan Day also plays Si Jiahui at the same time.

There are then two more matches this evening, both of which start at 7pm. Four-time world champion John Higgins faces Ben Woollaston, while Shaun Murphy – who whitewashed Ronnie O’Sullivan at last week’s Riyadh Season Snooker Championship – takes on Lyu Haotian.
