UK’s ‘favourite’ winter seaside staycation with amazing shops | UK | Travel
Whilst winter isn’t typically the most popular season for a getaway, many Brits are still keen to discover the UK during these colder months. With the festive period fast approaching, now is the perfect moment for a cosy winter break closer to home.
Travel experts at Airbnb revealed the most popular destinations trending on their accommodation platform. Brighton, one of the nation’s most famous coastal cities, was identified as one of the hottest winter staycation spots. The beloved British resort also holds the title of the UK’s most walkable seaside city, positioning it as an excellent choice for those wanting to enjoy crisp winter strolls.
Amongst its most popular attractions is the elaborate Royal Pavilion, initially constructed as a coastal retreat for King George IV.
Throughout the winter months, the Pavilion welcomes visitors from 10am until 5.15pm, with final entry permitted at 4:30pm. You can also go ice skating around its majestic grounds, but these slots must be booked in advance, and the rink is open from 9.30am until 9.30pm.
‘AnnE & Chas’ shared on Tripadvisor: “What a fantastic experience. The Royal Pavilion was so exotic and full of splendour.
“It must have been stunning when it was first built as it took our breath away. It has aged very elegantly due to the hard work of all the staff concerned.”
If the weather turns wet and blustery, there’s no finer pastime than spending the afternoon browsing through the shops and boutiques scattered across Brighton Lanes.
From antique treasures to retro fashion, the Lanes offer an ideal location for last-minute Christmas purchases. If nothing captures your attention, you can always settle into a cosy cafe for a warming hot chocolate or seasonal mulled wine.
If the skies are clear, take a stroll along the promenade for an invigorating seaside walk and spot the remains of the old pier which continues to stand despite the blaze.
When night falls, there are plenty of dazzling light shows to check out that will definitely get you in the festive mood. Glow Wild, an award-winning festive light trail at Wakehurst, is back for 2025, and according to Visit Brighton, it’s an ‘illuminated wonderland of bespoke light instillations crafted by international artists.’
There’s also the light show at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, which is on for select dates during the Christmas period. Each of these installations is a carefully curated scene, using the natural beauty of the environment which is really brought to life by the lights.
