Idyllic village with 300 locals bursting with celebs like Ed Sheeran | UK | Travel
On the Suffolk coast in England you’ll find this charming town, surrounded by desolate land and home to several famous faces.
Set against an unspoilt coastal area in the South, Walberswick is a Georgian village offering a sense of peace and tranquillity for those who need a great escape. Its neighbouring town, Southwold, acts as a more lively destination for a family holiday, while this village is its quieter alternative for a simple break.
What draws many people to the area is its vast landscape of heaths and marshland, as the village sits at the mouth of the River Blyth. It backs onto a sandy beach, set against grassy dunes with the nature reserve that covers 1,000 acres of land.
Within its distinctive meadows is a natural environment that is home to otters, deer and an impressive range of bird species for those with a keen eye for bird-watching. Although, it’s the humans of this town that draw in even more curiosity from visitors, having long attracted residents that work across the arts, film and media.
Most recently, last year the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran drew attention to Walberswick when he used it as the filming location for one of his music videos. The Suffolk-born star’s Christmas song Under the Tree features the seaside village heavily, and it seems he enjoyed his time there so much he didn’t want to say goodbye.
Reports suggest Sheeran has since bought two homes in the area, nearby to Walberswick. Although the singer’s biggest estate, and where he is believed to spend the most time, is based in Framlingham, Suffolk.
Despite its small size, a surprising number of British celebrities have flocked to the area and have owned holiday homes across the villages for decades. Notably, this includes filmmaker Richard Curtis and his family, the man behind Love Actually, Bridget Jones and About Time.
In fact, the director dedicated his Christmas novel, titled That Christmas, to the village of Walberswick and all of his festive seasons spent there. He admitted to spending a vast majority of his time in their home there during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he took plenty of walks along the coast.
Joining him in this elite group is Kiera Knightley, who is believed to also have a home in the village, after being spotted in numerous pubs and shops in the area. Reports first surfaced back in 2018 she had made the move, and she’s not the only actor to escape to its idyllic coast.
David Morrissey also joins these celebs in Walberswick, as the husband of novelist Esther Freud, whose sister is married to Richard Curtis.
The family’s strong ties to the area meant it was inevitable that the Walking Dead actor would find himself spending his quiet summers by the seaside.
Away from its star-studded residents, the village is famous for its crabbing and holds the World Open Championships there each summer. People flock from all over to take part in catching crabs for sport or just merely joining in for fun with their bucket and net, hoping to snap up the sea creatures.
