5 films ‘everyone must watch’ at least once in their life – two from the same franchise | Films | Entertainment
Many of us rely on IMDb – an entertainment review website – when it comes to deciphering whether a movie is worth watching. It’s one of the most popular film reviewing platforms, and it includes an average rating to help aid your decision-making process.
Now IMDb has compiled a list of the “Movies Everyone Should See” at least once in their lifetime, and there may be a sneaky sequel in there too. According to the website, here are five films you must see in your life.
Getting gold is The Godfather. The epic gangster film was always going to make the cut. This time it’s the audience who rank it highest with 98%, but the critics aren’t far behind at 97%, they say: “One of Hollywood‘s greatest critical and commercial successes, The Godfather gets everything right; not only did the movie transcend expectations, it established new benchmarks for American cinema.”
The Godfather Part II serves as both a sequel and a prequel to the original Godfather film. It features two parallel narratives; one continues the 1958 story of Michael Corleone, portrayed by Pacino, who has taken over as the new Don of the family and is striving to safeguard the family business following an assassination attempt on his life.
The other narrative traces the life of his father, Vito Corleone, played by Robert De Niro, from his Sicilian childhood through to the establishment of the family business in New York.
Coming in at number 10 is Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. Its cast includes Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino. The film takes you on a wild ride as tensions increase when charismatic gangster fanboy Henry Hill (Liotta) takes cocaine and begins making reckless actions. Its unique styling of bleeding one scene into the next means you can’t take your eyes off it. The gangster thriller is a cinematic masterpiece and is likely in many people’s top 10.
Scarface is a 1983 crime drama film directed by Brian De Palma, written by Oliver Stone and starring Al Pacino. It is a remake of the 1932 film, in turn based on the 1930 novel. The film co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Robert Loggia and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.
The movie’s plot reads: “Tony Montana and his close friend Manny, build a strong drug empire in Miami. However, as his power begins to grow, so does his ego and his enemies, and his own paranoia begins to plague his empire.”
Reservoir Dogs is a 1992 heist film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino in his feature-length directorial debut. It stars Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi, Lawrence Tierney, Michael Madsen, Tarantino and Edward Bunker.
A summary of the plot states: “Six criminals, hired to steal diamonds, do not know each other’s true identity. While attempting the heist, the police ambushes them, leading them to believe that one of them is an undercover officer.”
