In the last five years, UK high streets have lost a huge number of banks after multiple branches have closed. One bank which has announced hundreds of closures is HSBC which has shut over 300 of its branches. While HSBC has not made any closures in 2025, many of its branches closed between 2020 and 2023.

But this is not the only bank to shut some of its physical locations with plenty of others doing the same. The likes of Santander, Lloyds and Halifax have also closed some of their branches in the last few years. This year, Lloyds Bank has closed 96 of its branches while Santander has shut 76 and Halifax has closed 100 branches. The change comes as more people turn to online banking with less need for physical locations.

HSBC said it has not announced a branch closure programme since November 2022. It said that in August 2022, it committed to announcing no new closure programmes until at least 2026. A spokesperson for the bank said HSBC is committed to investing into its branch network and has no current plans to close any branches beyond its branch commitment. HSBC continues to support customers and communities beyond its physical locations, including through HSBC Local and Banking Hubs, and providing access to accounts through the Post Office network.
