Oscar-winning war film streaming on Amazon Prime fans say is ‘one of the best’ | Films | Entertainment

A World War 2 film is ‘one of the best’ viewers have ever seen, describing the pacing of the story as ‘perfect’. The British film set in 1940 highlights a governmental cabinet crisis in the early months of the second global conflict – as Europe’s fate hangs by a thread with a new prime minister at the helm.

The ‘riveting’ true tale of when newly appointed prime minister Winston Churchill was left with a huge decision on his hands of whether to negotiate with Hitler or not – and how the course of action he chose cemented the world’s history. The film, Darkest Hour, is a biographical drama where ‘you get a glimpse into the personal lives of people you’ve learned about your whole life’ – and viewers are hooked. Gary Oldman stars as Winston Churchill, playing out the leadership of the wartime British prime minister – and the legacy he cements during the toughest times.

Churchill must decide whether to continue to fight Germany against incredible odds or to attempt to haggle with a dictator.

Viewers describe the film as ‘one of the best movies’ ever seen, with one saying they loved the ‘incredible movie’

One reviewer described the acting as ‘phenomenal’, describing ‘the pacing is perfect’ in this ‘riveting true story’, which is complemented as being ‘expertly told’.

It follows Churchill’s early days in the role as PM in 1940, he took on the huge task of governing the country on May 10, 1940 – and soon after a war cabinet crisis was on his hands to deal with.

In the movie’s casting, Kristin Scott Thomas plays Clementine Churchill, Ronald Pickup is Neville Chamberlain, Lily James is Elizabeth Layton, Stephen Dillane plays Viscount Halifax – and Ben Mendelsohn takes on the part as King George VI.

Churchill is played to perfection by actor Gary Oldman, whose Oscar-winning performance makes the film emotionally gripping.

The Darkest Hour title describes just how these early days of the war felt for Britain, Europe and the world, largely credited to Churchill, with the fate of many hanging on his decisions.

Reviewing the film on Rotten Tomatoes, Kylie C wrote: “Love movies like this where you get a glimpse into the personal lives of people you’ve learned about your whole life. Really makes you feel for Churchill.”

Rotten Tomatoes describes the Darkest Hour as being ‘held together by Gary Oldman’s electrifying performance, which brings Winston Churchill to life’.

Reviewer Jay W wrote: “Darkest Hour stars Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and follows his first month as Prime Minister.

“In it, Churchill immediately has to deal with important decisions of what England is to do about Hitler and the Second World War.

“The two big aspects that people remember from this movie are: the makeup to transform Oldman into Churchill and Oldman’s transformative performance in the role.

“The two aspects rightfully gained Academy recognition for their success. And yes, the two elements combine to do their job just right.

“Watching the film, you completely forget you are watching a performance and just get sucked into the world it has created.”

One Rotten Tomatoes added of the film: “One of the best movies I’ve seen!!!”

And another wrote: “Inspiring, beautiful, super good acting of everyone not only Gary Oldman, after 2 hours I wanted other 2h.”
