Charming cathedral city that’s home to ‘unforgettable’ best restaurant in the UK | Travel News | Travel


Perched on the edge of South Downs National Park in Hampshire is one of the UK’s more charming cities – a place that has recently been named as home to the best local restaurant in the UK. The cathedral city of Winchester has many other claims to fame.

One of the oldest colleges in the world is here and has been used a filming location for blockbusters such as Harry Potter and Les Misérables The city is England’s ancient capital and was once home to King Alfred the great – Jane Austen is buried here too. It’s most famous for its incredible eleventh century Cathedral and the Great Hall which has housed King Arthur’s Round Table for more than 700 years. 

The city combines city hustle and bustle with country charm effortlessly – for example, Winchester has the country’s largest farmers market, which is perfect for a day of exploring. 

If you decide to pop into Winchester, which is easily done as it’s just an hour on the train from London, you can visit the newly voted best local restaurant in the UK.

According to the Good Food Guide, the Lucky Lychee in Winchester is the best of the best.

This Malaysian restaurant is run from a Greene King Pub and according to editor at large Elizabeth Carter is “the kind of place you’d dream of having in your neighbourhood”. She said: “James Harris’s energy and charm shine throughout, while Nicole Yeoh’s cooking is unforgettable. I haven’t stopped recommending it.”

Owners James and Nicole were thrilled with the win, saying they were proud to showcase Malaysian cuisine, and thanked their customers for the support which has allowed them to do what they love.
