Liverpool ‘to make significant Marc Guehi bid’ after closing in on transfer agreement | Football | Sport

Liverpool are reportedly set to table a ‘significant’ offer for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi. The defender has just one year left on his contract at Selhurst Park and is therefore expected to be on the move this summer.

Guehi has been heavily linked with a move away from the Eagles over the past few seasons, with Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham all showing an interest in acquiring the services of the England international.

But Liverpool now look set to attempt to steal a march on other suitors by opening talks for the 24-year-old. According to The Telegraph, the Reds are set to make an opening bid for Guehi and they are in the ‘best position’ to strike an agreement with Palace.

Spurs submitted an offer of £55million plus a further £15m in add-ons for the centre-back in January, and it remains to be seen whether Palace are able to demand that level of fee for their skipper in talks with Liverpool.

The Reds have quickly looked to raise funds to sign the ex-Chelsea defender via the sale of Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen. A deal is in place which will see the 22-year-old head to the Bundesliga for a fee of £30million. Quansah is expected to pen a five-year deal with the German outfit.

Leverkusen are hopeful that the fee they are paying for the Liverpool academy graduate will be ‘covered’ if the centre-back continues to develop with regular gametime at the Bay Arena. The Reds are said to be ‘reluctant’ to part ways with Quansah, having handed him a long-term contract last season, but are working to certain budgets and thus his exit will facilitate a move for Guehi.

The deal is one of three that have been agreed between Liverpool and Leverkusen this summer. The Reds have already welcomed Jeremie Frimpong to their ranks for £29.5million, with the Netherlands international set to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in right-back.

Liverpool are also closing in on a record-breaking deal for Florian Wirtz, having seen off competition of Manchester City and Real Madrid to put themselves in pole position to secure his signature. The playmaker is set to complete his move to Anfield in the next 24 hours, though the deal is not related to the current talks involving Quansah.
