This pretty spot in Europe is the perfect affordable destination to head to this summer. Bucharest in Romania has a vibrant mix of history, culture, and modern energy. 

And, according to The Telegraph, it is one of the cheapest places to enjoy a holiday in Europe, with a pint coming at just £2.41. Moreover, a meal for two at a mid-range restaurant, including three courses, will also not set tourists too far back, costing an average of £42.99. Equally, a bottle of mid-range wine in the city comes for £5.16. The capital is home to landmarks like the Palace of the Parliament and it has a charming Old Town, full of historic architecture and lively bars. Bucharest is also known for its green spaces like Herastrau Park and cultural spots like the Romanian Athenaeum which add to its charm.

One must-do while in Bucharest is to visit Stavropoleos Monastery which is one of the oldest churches in the city.

A visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “The monastery is situated in the Old Town. It is a fabulous place steeped in history, the interior is stunning and it’s free to visit. Do not miss the opportunity if you are in town.”

Another penned: “It is a very small and very beautiful church. It is one of the oldest churches in Bucharest. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful church in Bucharest.”

While you’re in Bucharest, seeing the Old Town is one of the best ways to absorb the local culture.

The area is known for its pretty buildings, its range of restaurants and lively atmosphere.

It is just a short walk away from the castles and the surrounding countryside.

Another visitor to the city said on Tripadvisor: “This is a beautiful area of Bucharest, the oldest part of the city, with cafes all over, nighttime activity is great with the people coming out nightly for coffee or to have a beer or food with friends.”

To get to Bucharest, a flight from London takes around three hours and 15 minutes.

If you’re hoping to enjoy nature while you’re there, you should visit Herăstrau Park.

The large park has a lake with the opportunity to take part in water activities.

One visitor said: “Beautiful park to take a nice relaxing stroll around right in the middle of a busy city. Plenty of little cafes and stands to get drinks, an icecream or snack.”
