Warning to cruise passengers as popular item banned on board | Cruise | Travel
Packing for holidays is rarely a fun experience, with many tourists racking their brains to remember everything they may need for a couple of weeks away from home.
However, whilst many Brits get frustrated by forgetting to bring an essential with them on their holiday, the majority of cruise lines enforce strict bans on certain items.
In particular, passengers soon to embark on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship have been urged to avoid bringing a number of common items with them, including extension cords.
They warned: “Electrical Extension Cords — including power strips/surge protected strips and multi-plug outlets [are not prohibited].
“We do allow consumer-type power conversion device USB chargers (multi-plug blocks on which the outputs are for USB cables).”
When travelling abroad, many Brits like to pack an extension cord to make sure they have enough outlets to charge items like their phone and camera, and have the right sockets to fit their plugs.
However, Royal Caribbean prevents passengers from using extension cords on their ships to reduce the risk of fires breaking out on board due to faulty wiring or damaged electronics.
Nevertheless, passengers are still able to bring USB power banks on board, which can be used to easily charge a number of phones at once.
Whilst Royal Caribbean is strict about banning extension cords, their rival Carnival Cruise Line have urged passengers to avoid packing portable speakers.
This ban was put in place as a number of passengers were spotted distracting other passengers by using speakers to listen to loud music in public spaces.
Other cruise lines have not banned portable speakers outright, but similar devices including baby monitors are typically prohibited as the signals they send could interfere with the ship’s navigation system. Nevertheless, some cruise lines do allow passengers to hire a modified baby monitor whilst on board.
In most cases, passengers who bring banned goods on board will still be able to enjoy their cruise holiday, with the company confiscating the item in question upon arrival.
Typically, these items will be returned to passengers when they disembark at the end of their voyage, likely being put in a specific section of the cruise terminal.
Nevertheless, it is important that passengers consult the list of banned or restricted items their cruise line enforces before packing their bags for the trip.
