7 Man Utd stars to miss Wolves match as Bruno Fernandes makes request | Football | Sport

Manchester United will be without captain Bruno Fernandes for their Premier League clash with Wolves on Tuesday, despite the midfielder’s request to resume training just a week after sustaining a hamstring injury. Head coach Ruben Amorim is also monitoring Mason Mount’s condition closely after the player was forced off during the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle.

The Red Devils opted not to risk Mount after he reported feeling discomfort against the Magpies, with Amorim already grappling with a lengthy injury roster. Noussair Mazraoui, Amad and Bryan Mbeumo are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations. Central defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire remain sidelined, and Kobbie Mainoo will not be available for Wolves’ trip to Old Trafford.

“I don’t know how Mase is going to be for that game,” Amorim confirmed. “I think Kobbie Mainoo is not going to be ready. Bruno is not going to be ready. I think Matt is not going to be ready. Harry is not going to be ready. So, I think we are not going to have more players.”

Fernandes is expected to miss several weeks due to a minor hamstring issue, although Amorim has revealed that the Portuguese star is already pressing to rejoin training sessions at Carrington.

Mainoo is scheduled to return to first-team preparations this week, potentially making him available for Sunday’s clash with Leeds, but De Ligt and Maguire face extended periods on the treatment table.

“Bruno was already saying that he needs to train, but we don’t know,” Amorim added. “No chance he is going to play against Wolves, no chance.”

“Kobbie Mainoo is going to start on the [training] pitch also, so we will see. Matthijs is struggling a little bit. Harry the same thing.”

Fernandes was present at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, witnessing United’s victory over Newcastle, which ended a six-match winless streak in the league when the 31-year-old was absent from the squad.

In his absence, Lisandro Martinez took up the captain’s armband, but United’s head coach, Amorim, highlighted that Fernandes’ influence extends beyond the pitch. He commended the Portuguese star for his unwavering support of his team-mates during his injury period and noted that Fernandes has been observing training sessions after completing his treatment at Carrington.

“He’s always speaking, that’s why he’s the captain,” Amorim explained. “He has bad things sometimes, the way move his arms, but he has a lot of good things.

“The practice, every time he makes a recovery, he is the guy who is going to watch the other guys’ training that day. So there is a lot of things that you guys don’t see but that he does. He’s a great leader all the time.

“He’s the guy that is watching training even after treatment. He’s going there. I don’t know if he wants my job or not, but he’s a leader. The guy is a leader.”

Wolves are still in search of their first league win this season, having lost 16 out of their 18 matches. United triumphed 4-1 at Molineux earlier this month, and the rematch provides an opportunity for United to end the year on a high note.
